Orono City Council member Matt Johnson has been embroiled in controversy since he received public right of way land from the City of Orono in 2022 for free via a handful of Orono City Council members. Also adding to the controversy is that apparently Mayor Dennis Walsh paid for Mr. Johnson’s campaign materials to run for Orono City Council prior to the land donation. Complaints have been filed with the Minnesota State Auditor’s office due to the fact that Mr. Johnson is a sitting Council member and this transaction appears to break Minnesota State Statute.
There are questions as to whether or not Mr. Johnson used his real estate knowledge to rewrite Orono City codes to enrich himself. Citizens called for Mr. Johnson to be reported to the Minnesota Board of Realtors for investigation. Currently Mr. Johnson holds a real estate license with https://www.compass.com/agents/matt-johnson/
As of November 12, 2024 Mr. Johnson resigned his City Council position https://www.startribune.com/orono-city-council-member-resigns-leading-to-more-political-turnover/601180318? possibly due to nonpayment to local subcontractors and Citizen outrage as to the extensive wetland damage at his new development on #1003Wildhursttrail #1007Wildhursttrail #1011Wildhursttrail #1015Wildhursttrail
Mr. Johnson’s unethical behavior serves as a reminder that Citizens need to watch and attend their City Council meetings.
