City of Orono’s Deflection Tactics
How ironic - and where is your boat City of Orono, Minnesota Government ? Didn’t you decide that the pushing through #control of Orono Fire is more important than public safety? Thousands of residents will be celebrating on Lake Minnetonka this weekend - where’s your service? Oh, that’s right, you are depending on Long Lake Fire to make up your missing service coverage for the Lakeshore City aren’t you? And charging us 7x+ more for less.

Why are Orono Taxpayers paying a Whopping 7X More for LESS Fire Service?
Orono Residents!
How much are you willing to pay per call for Orono Fire Service?
Why does it cost 7X more? For only 1/3 of Orono serviced? Without a boat?
Why aren't the Citizens aware of the tens of millions that Mayor Walsh is spending on service that doesn't have the same coverage as last year?
Stop this apparent inefficient and expensive undertaking and let's get back to what is most important - SAFETY.
Who is creeping around your back door? #mariaveach
Who is creeping around your back door?
It might be Orono Council member Maria Veach. Seems she's been emailing and apparently lobbying for Orono Fire behind the scenes with various Fire Fighter wives. Is Ms. Veach lobbying for herself? Orono Fire is the same department her husband works for and will receive a pension from.
Calling all those who Boat on Lake Minnetonka! And those living in and around Navarre!
During last night's City Council meeting, Orono's Lake Minnetonka Conservation District (LMCD) Representative said that Orono doesn't need a rescue boat - because the private marinas would rescue Citizens.
Mayor Walsh's "Great Ride" at Taxpayer Expense
Mayor Walsh’s messages in the city newsletter boast of the last eight years being a “great ride”. Much of that "great ride” for him has come at the expense of increasing the city’s tax levy over 80% in those eight years. It's a great ride if one can spend, spend, spend.
Orono’s tax base and citizens' house assessments have never been higher in the city’s history. Inflated home values and new density developments have created the largest tax base from which to tax and spend. Repairing roads and maintaining parks is great but not creating a whole new fire department and going into debt to build a new supersized public works building when only a new outside storage area was needed. These new projects are costing the citizens over tens of millions of dollars. Instead of getting a break in tax rates when times are good, the Orono citizens are watching their property taxes rise and the city’s reserves dwindle.
5/28/24 Orono City Council Stands in Front of the Officers and Explorers
Monday, May 28, 2024, the Orono City Council meeting, a ceremony was held for two new police officers and a recognition of the group of Orono Police Explorers. This is the photo that was posted of the event.
To our new officers and Explorers - please note that the Orono citizens hold you front and center in appreciation for your work. This photo unfortunately showcases three city council members hamming it up in front of the good work you do. This photo should not be about a campaign opportunity, but rather showcase Police officers and the Explorers.
Navarre and Surrounding Residents Should be Concerned
With the new Orono Fire Department July 1st start just a month away, a concerned Orono Citizen asked the biggest questions of all - "Who is going to show up if I call the Fire Department?"
Little information from the City of Orono is cited and fear of lack of Fire Department training also mentioned for this Navarre and surrounding area Orono Fire Department zone.
Walsh, Crosby and Veach Break Open Meeting Law, Again?
During the "For Profit" Pavilion ground breaking, Mayor Walsh and Orono Council members #richardcrosby and #mariaveach decided to hold a quorum without notifying the Citizens of Orono.
This appears to be yet again another violation of Open Meeting Law https://mn.gov/admin/data-practices/meetings/rules/
This law is in place to protect the Citizens so that they can know what is happening and participate in the governance of their community.
Isn't the New Public Works Building just Too Big?
What is too big for a city of around 8000 people? Why did Mayor Walsh build a Public Works Building with an extra 25,000 square feet when our small down has been losing population for the last three years?
Why weren't we informed that he bonded this project at $13 million; bid it at $16 million and now has cost overruns somewhere around $22 million or more? The sad fact is he refuses to give Citizens a detailed budget in full and keeps piecemealing the details so he can keep going.
Maria and Mistrust: Why Citizens Are Finding Orono Council member Maria Veach untrustworthy?
Maria and Mistrust: Why Citizens Are Finding Orono Council member Maria Veach untrustworthy?
During the 4/22/24 City Council meeting, Ms. Veach brought up how she is trying to build trust with the community. One must earn trust, and when a relationship is so damaged by several factors, it may be an impossible hill to climb.
Since #mariaveach was appointed to the city council without a public interview, many factors keep building mistrust with the reasons she was selected.
Why has Maria Veach flip flopped on her opinion of Orono Fire?
Is Maria Veach Misleading the Public?
When Orono Council member Maria Veach spoke on 4/8/24 at the Orono City Council meeting she read a document that we now have up on our website here: https://www.friendsoforono.org/maria-veach-1 There are many misnomers and several misleading statements that we will highlight throughout the coming weeks.
How can Ms. Veach advocate spending several times more for service that is essentially the same or that may be even less safe?
Breaking News: Four Former Mayors Speak Out
Read all about how and why Four Former Orono Mayors think Orono is becoming the Pariah of the Community.
Citizens speak out against Orono Fire - top concerns are safety, response times, training, temp fire garage as fire house?
On March 11, 2024, Orono Citizen, Kelly P. addressed the Orono City Council about her concerns related to the future of fire service for the City of Orono. She specifically spoke about concerns regarding the July 1, 2024 change in service for the Navarre area requested by the City of Orono.
For over 20 years the Long Lake Fire Department has effectively served Navarre, but In just 16 weeks the untested and unestablished, Orono Fire Department will respond to emergency calls the area.
Why doesn't Council member Veach follow our laws?
Why is Maria Veach taking it upon herself to singly negotiate with the City of Long Lake?
According to Orono Municipal Code, Ms. Veach cannot be exercising control over the administration of the city in trying to seek concessions from the city of Long Lake. At the very least she should have had City Administrator Edwards with her and a majority vote of the council allowing her to approach Long Lake officials on city business.

Yet another Orono City project is squandering more taxpayers dollars, and running over the initial estimate by over 46%. During the Monday February 26th, Mayor Walsh and his council majority will ask city council to vote for a temporary fire shelter next to the Navarre Station #2.

Citizens Speak Out at 1/8/24 Orono City Council Meeting
Krista goes on to make another great point - why belittle the LLFD, and then hire their Chief and several of their Firefighters? This form of double talk to the Citizens of Orono is insulting given the vast expense that Orono taxpayers will be footing for this unnecessary fire department - millions of dollars yet to be finalized and explained in a public manner
